Generic Dostinex

 

Carrying the brand name Dostinex, Cabergoline is a popular medication for treating certain hormone imbalances. Belonging to a group of drugs called dopamine receptor antagonists, Cabergoline acts on a hormone called prolactin which is released from the pituitary gland. It decreases the excess amount of prolactin in the blood to effectively deal with the condition of hyperprolactinemia.

 

Dostinex (Cabergoline) may also be used for other purposes like specific menstrual problems, fertility problems in both men and women and tumors of the pituitary gland, known as pituitary prolactinomas. It generally performs the role of stopping the brain from generating and discharging the prolactin hormone from the pituitary. Generic Dostinex is discontinued when you have normal prolactin levels continuously for 6 months. The treatment may be started again if symptoms of excess prolactin come to the fore again.

 

Dostinex (Cabergoline) is usually administered orally twice a week. If there is a need for dosage adjustment, it must be done at 4 week periods on the basis of blood tests to determine prolactin levels. While the initial recommended dosage of Cabergoline for adults is 0.25mg twice a week, the dosage for children must be determined by the doctor.

 

It is very much advisable to follow the guidelines of your doctor and take Dostinex in the exact amount as prescribed for you. Undesired results may happen if you take it in large amounts or for periods longer than recommended by your doctor. Carry out regular blood tests and do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.

 

After a normal prolactin level has been maintained for 6 months, Dostinex may be stopped, subject to regular monitoring of the prolactin level to determine whether or when Cabergoline treatment should be started again.

 

If you forget to take a dose of Cabergoline, there is nothing to worry about and take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. If it is time to consume your next dose, it would be better to skip the missed dose and take the medication at the next specified time schedule. Don’t try to make up for that lost dose by taking extra dosages of Dostinex (Cabergoline).

 

If you think that you’ve taken excess amount of that medicine, you must seek immediate medical attention without wasting any time. Overdoses of Dostinex (Cabergoline) may lead to nasal congestion, hallucinations, confusion, fainting or feeling light-headed.

You need to be extra cautious while driving, running machines or doing any activities that demand you to be alert.
